Atmosphere: I’m generally a desk-based luncher so most of my midday meals are eaten over a newspaper while telephones ring in the background. Eating at our canteen means sitting in an open, light and rather noisy area that’s something like a school cafeteria, only with big television screens showing sport (with the volume turned down) instead of educational posters. Counter staff are cheerful and friendly even when it’s busy.
Worth queueing for: Fish-and-chip Fridays are always popular, if not entirely healthy, while there’s nearly always a line of hungry punters waiting at the pasta bar, where staff from News International’s newspapers and websites get to select their own ingredients for sauces that are cooked on the spot. Also popular are the weekly country-themed options: the Mexican is particularly good, though I might be saying that because I appreciate any excuse to eat jalapeños and douse my food with Tabasco. There’s always fruit (and crisps) available.
Straight in the bin: Even tasty food looks dreadfully unappetising after it’s been sitting on the display table at the entrance for hours; vegetarian meals can involve a weirdly random mixture of vegetables – one recent burrito included broccoli and cocktail onions.
What this place really needs is: An indication of how healthy meals are and information about where the food, particularly meat, fish and eggs, comes from.
Tried and tested: Salad box with chickpeas, white and green beans, carrot and sultana salad, mixed lettuce and sweetcorn; boiled egg; low-fat strawberry yoghurt; and a diet Coke £2.59. (Plus 40p for a chocolate bar when hunger pangs hit later that afternoon).
