Clearly not content with life in retirement, Mike Harris, the former boss of Egg, is making his internet comeback.

The banking executive, who co-founded the internet bank hatched from Prudential Banking, has emerged at the head of a new website offering consumers direct access to a mass of information held in digital format.

Garlik, which officially launches next Wednesday, will offer users access to credit records, land registry details and other personal information hidden on the internet.

Mr Harris will act as executive chairman of the venture, backed by 3i and Doughty Hanson, the private equity groups. Tom Ilube, his chief information officer at Egg, will be chief executive.

Mr Harris joined Prudential in 1995 to head its banking arm. He helped to launch Egg three years later and oversaw its flotation. From 1988 to 1991 he helped to build up FirstDirect, the rival telephone and internet bank run by HSBC, into one of the country’s largest banks without a high street presence.

Despite his success in the banking sector, he has spent much of his career in the telecoms industry. On leaving FirstDirect he joined Mercury Communications, then the UK’s second-biggest telecoms operator, as its chief executive. He left in 1994.

He was promoted to executive vice-chairman at Egg in 2001 and retired in January this year.

He enjoys playing tennis and skiing and is also a keen football fan, supporting Aston Villa.

Mr Harris read chemistry at University College London and enjoys walking and going to the theatre.
