Graphic: the world's longest road bridge
“If you want to grow rich, you must first build roads,” an old Chinese saying goes. The opening yesterday of the world’s longest road bridge over the sea should swell still further the coffers of the glittering metropolis that is Shanghai.
The £840 million bridge, measuring 36km, spans Hangzhou Bay to link China’s financial hub and the port city of Ningbo to the south. It will reduce travel time between the two key cities in the Yangtze delta from four hours to two and a half.
A ceremony was held in the middle of the cable-stayed bridge to mark the official opening. The bridge has been built to withstand the typhoons that sweep in from the Pacific to batter the east coast each summer. Its steel pylons are 89m long, reaching beneath a sea as deep as 60m in some places. In addition, the sections of the bridge had to be winched into position over expanses of quicksand-like mudflats.
To begin with lorries, vehicles with large loads and anything carrying dangerous chemicals will be banned. State television greeted the start of traffic on the bridge with great fanfare, devoting almost the first ten minutes of the evening news of the Labour Day holiday to the subject. Wen Jiabao, the premier, visited the southern end of the bridge in Ningbo.Private investors funded almost 30 per cent of the project, the first time that China’s private sector had been allowed to put money into a major public infrastructure work. Officials say that the capital costs should be recovered in 15 years.

Absolutely. I am with you. I hope China will achieve much more great things and be an outstanding nation in the world.

After reading it, I really feel proud as a Chinese. In the past years, China has made a lot of achievements, for example, the building of railway in Tibet in 2006,the building of the three Gorges Dam,and so on.All these reflect ''China is great,Chinese government is great, and Chinese are great!"

As a Chinese student, I'm proud of the bridge and am really exciting to see the official opening ceremony on TV. The bridge, it is said, have welcomed more than 80 thousand lorries a day. It will reduce the travel time, which will benefit both the people and the economy. Wish bright future of it.
May, Jinhua, China
As a citizen of CiXi the city which is the jumping-off point of the cable-stayed bridge, I am very proud of it. Although I was watching the ceremony online at home that day, I felt the heat atmosphere through the TV. The bridge was open to traffic at 23:58, and I heard that the first car had been waited there since 8:00 a.m. Besides, during these 3days, there were billions of cars got across the bridge. I am in the full conviction that the opening of this bridge will bring more flourish to our economy.

From this issue, we can see some things. The first is our government is becoming more and more democratic. The first time that Chinas private sector had been allowed to put money into a major public infrastructure work. This is really a big step towards democracy. The second is Zhejiang merchants are really successful, powerful about 30 per cent of the project fund was provided by private investors. In the meantime, we can Zhejiang merchants are plucky and far-sighted. The capital costs should be recovered in 15 years. It is a long-term investment. It do great deal to the future.

A website dedicated to the bridge, http://www.hangzhoubaybridge.com/default.asp, describes itself as "the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world" as opposed to the longest road bridge.
Tom Tatlow, Cary, NC, USA
I believe you will find the world's longest road bridge is in Louisiana in the USA: the Lake Pontchatrain Causeway near New Orleans links Metairie to Mandeville, and spans 24 miles (~40 km). It is not an engineering marvel, but it is longer by a few km. Sorry China.
C Bozner, London,
Brilliant engineering achievement by China.
