Cold Mountain (2003)
BBC Three, 9pm
Despite a starry cast and some brilliantly orchestrated set-piece battles, the late director Anthony Minghella's American Civil War epic ultimately collapses into a windy, slushy mess. Jude Law plays a wounded Confederate soldier struggling to make it back home to his would-be sweetheart, played by Nicole Kidman. Renée Zellweger won an Oscar for her rambunctious supporting role. (152min)
Collateral (2004)
Film4, 9pm
Tom Cruise plays against type in Michael Mann's slick thriller as a menacing, silver-haired Terminator who flies into Los Angeles to carry out a bulk order of executions in a single night. An Oscar- nominated Jamie Foxx outshines his more famous co-star as the anxious cab driver forced into chauffeuring Cruise's chillingly ruthless killer around the city. (120min)
3-Iron (2004)
BBC Four, 10pm
There is an air of film-school experiment about this dreamlike drama from the South Korean writer-director Kim Ki Duk. Told almost entirely without dialogue, 3-Iron stars Jae Hee as an alienated youth who breaks into empty houses. But an encounter with an abused wife leads to violence, retribution and a desperate escape attempt. Very slight, but beautifully filmed and haunting. (90min)
Crazy/Beautiful (2001)
BBC One, 11.15pm
The plot, about teenage lovers crossing class and race barriers, sounds banal on paper. But John Stockwell's high-school yarn is a superior example of the classroom romance genre, boasting an intelligent script and strong performances. Kirsten Dunst stars as the spoilt, self-destructive wild child who falls for a poor Mexican- American classmate (Jay Hernandez) at her private LA school. (99min)
