Omaha Beach: The Real Horror
National Geographic, 7pm
“They told us, ‘In 30 days, half of you will be dead',” recalls one veteran in this sombre account of the bloody, ferociously fought D-Day battle, which claimed the lives of at least 2,000 US infantrymen in one day.
Make My Body Younger
BBC Three, 8pm
Forget those NHS adverts, any young binge-drinker should be made to watch this, a kind of You Are What You Overeat and Overdrink in which twentysomethings are given “living autopsies”. Take 23-year-old Ibiza rep Emma, who enjoys regular 24-hour drinking sessions and smokes three packs a day. Medical tests offer an insight into the state of her besieged organs and she's terrified into swearing to a life of quinoa and mint tea. This series will be a wake-up call for any party animal.
Black Power Salute
BBC Four, 9pm
That the Olympics in Beijing have become a focal point for pro-Tibet demonstrations is a reminder that the Games - whatever their lofty ideals - are inextricably linked to political expression. Which makes this fine documentary about Tommie Smith and John Carlos's courageous salute in 1968 suitably topical. It sets the iconic image of Smith and Carlos standing on the podium - each with a gloved, clenched fist raised aloft - in context of the burgeoning black-protest movement, the 200m races in which they ran and the story of what happened next for the athletes (a ban from further competitions, death threats and unemployment). There's also a great, blow-by-blow account of the long jumper Bob Beamon's famous freak leap.
