British women continued their domination of the music charts yesterday, as soul singer Duffy remained at the top of the album chart for another week, while hip-hop star Estelle hung on to the top spot on the singles chart.
Estelle, 28, who teamed up with American rap superstar Kanye West to record her single American Boy, has now been at No 1 for two weeks, while Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy, 23, has been on top for four weeks with her album Rockferry.
The pair’s success follows a run of good fortune this year for young British females. Scottish 20-year-old Amy MacDonald topped the charts in January with her album This Is Life, and 19-year-old Brit School graduate Adele went to No 1 in February with her debut release 19. Following her performance at the Brits, a deluxe version of Amy Winehouse’s album Back to Black also briefly took the top spot on the album chart.
Duffy was joined in the top three yesterday by two new releases. Panic at the Disco’s Pretty Odd debuted at No 2, while Foals’ Antidote, a hit with critics, entered the album chart at No 3.
On the singles chart, Low, by Flo Rida featuring T-Pain climbed four places to No 2, while Duffy’s single Mercy fell one spot to No 3.
Madonna’s collaboration with Justin Timberlake worked its way up the singles chart from No 7 to No 5, beaten to No 4 by the fast-climbing Black & Gold by Sam Sparro.
Leona Lewis’s success in the American charts last week has done little to help her this side of the Atlantic. Despite enormous publicity after she reached No 1 on the US album charts, the X Factor winner’s single Better in Time/Footprints in the Sand dropped from No 3 to No 6. Her album, Spirit, remained at No 4 - the same position it held last week.
