Who is the greatest ever Bond? I Quantum of Solace microsite
James Bond is back, and this time it’s mighty personal. Daniel Craig’s craggy agent picks up exactly where he left off in another bruising thriller that leaves you feeling both drained and exhilarated.
There are hand-to-hand fights that make your eyes water and old-school stunts involving motorbikes, speedboats, jet fighters and expensive cars that give you whiplash just looking at them. Really, nobody does it better than the new 007.
What makes Marc Forster’s film such an intriguing watch is that this is the first of the 22 Bond movies where the plot flows organically from the last instalment, and Quantum of Solace looks a far stronger picture for this rare continuity.
Needless to say the plot is as forbidding as the title. After the death of his girlfriend, Vesper Lynd, at the end of Casino Royale, Bond mixes revenge and duty dangerously as he hunts down the shadowy group that blackmailed Lynd to betray him.
A link to a bank account in Haiti puts Bond on the scent of Mathieu Amalric’s chief creep and ruthless businessman, Dominic Greene. All great Bond adversaries are generously blessed with kinks and quirks and Greene is no different. Amalric has a wonderfully wormy arrogance.
His sidekick, Elvis (Anatole Taubman), sports a monkish fringe, and Tarantino bad looks. But it’s the manner in which Amalric manages to poison all trust in Bond, even from his nearest and dearest, that makes him one of the classic arch-adversaries.
Cold rage threatens to derail Bond’s mission to crack Greene’s dastardly organisation known as Quantum, and I doubt that there’s a better actor at bottling rage than Daniel Craig.
All muscles, he has defined himself as a darker and more bare-knuckle Bond than any of his elegant predecessors.
The deadpan humour is still there. And despite the occasional blasts of visceral and grisly violence, Craig is threatening to become the most popular 007 yet, certainly with the younger generation.
Even the famous Bond babes seem to be getting tougher. Olga Kurylenko’s stunning, hard-as-nails beauty, Camille, has her own private vendetta that she wants to bring to a bloody conclusion, with or without Bond’s help. And Gemma Arterton’s effortlessly foxy Agent Field appeals to the better side of the wounded anti-romantic.
“Do you know how angry I am at myself,” says the naked, raven-haired M16 agent as Bond kisses his way up her spine. But Bond rarely lets a life-threatening difference of opinion get in the way of a decent flirt.
The familiar faces returning from Casino Royale pose a far more subtle, acidic test for Bond who has to tread carefully around treacherous old friends: Jeffrey Wright’s lugubrious CIA agent Felix Leiter; Giancarlo Giannini’s silky string-puller, René Mathis; Jesper Christensen’s duplicitous Mr White; and Judi Dench, of course, as his witheringly unimpressed boss, M.
“When you can’t tell your friends from your enemies it’s time to go,” growls Dench.
Of course, Bond is having none of it. There are new necks to break and toys to play with as the action rips across Austria, Italy, and South America.
The global stakes are as precarious as ever. Amalric’s masterplan to destabilise a South American regime, install a dodgy dictator, General Medrano (Joaquin Cosio), and take control of the biggest source of fresh water in the world is fabulously cock-eyed. But that’s one of the main reasons why we can’t get enough of the greatest franchise of them all.
The director, Marc Forster, has absorbed the lucrative lessons discovered in Martin Campbell’s Casino Royale. He has also managed to pace his sequel much better. Royale felt slightly wheel-clamped by one too many longeurs. If anything, the crunching chase sequences in Quantum of Solace are even more magnificently dangerous. And the daredevil leaps and tumbles through glass roofs are just as sensational as the splintering high-speed pyrotechnics.
But it’s the amount of heartache and punishment that Craig’s new Bond absorbs that makes him look so right for our times.
Bond is no longer a work in progress. He is now the cruel, finished article.
I like the new Bond movies a lot more than the old ones. This Bond is more realistic and more emotionally complex than the previous ones. Way to go, Daniel!
Cynthia, Canada,
I seem to be in a minority: I LIKE that it was not slapstick and camp. Casino was serious but still had style, and touched all the classic points so that it was still recognisable as a Bond film. But Quantum is a mess - instead of style, we get consumerism; instead of substance, we get nothing.
James David, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
You either love it or hate it.
Ben, USA, USA
The current Bond has no style. He has become a two dimensional action hero as incoherent as Rambo at his worst. The shaky camera action sequences reminded me more of a bad remake of the Blair Witch Project. If this is the best they can come up with then the Bond franchise is in its death throes.
Grahame, Wellington,
Guys, Daniel Craig is the best Bond ever. I'm not going to be one of those guys who clings on to the "old Bond," like letting go is a sin. Connery was good but he had the same problem as all the other Bonds before Craig: he had no substance. There was no character under the tux. Craig's got it.
Brock Boyce, Huntington Beach,
worst bond movie ever and iv seen them all. the only one that come close to being as bad is casino royal. Danial Craig must be the worst vond. He doesnt compete with the likes of Sean Connery & Perice Bronson. The story made no sence, the evil villians plan was to sell water more exspensive.STUPID
kurt, nsw, australia
Extraordinary how it's divided people. I saw it tonight and was knocked sideways. I expected to be disappointed given the negative reaction it's generated, but this brings a new cinematic language to the franchise. The problem tho' is it's an auteur director working with journeymen scriptwriters.
Jez, Effingham,
This film is appalling. I have been more entertained reading articles on quantum mechanics!
If you are expecting any of the charm and elegance of the old bond films you will come away very disappointed.
James, London,
The worst Bond film ever.
No Q
No Moneypenny
No gadgets
No girls
Terrible and dull plot
Worse villains
No "Bond movie atmosphere and grandeur"
And a large etc etc
Sergio, Caracas, Venezuela
wonderful film. saw it last night and loved it.
Michael, Sydney, Australia
I thought this film was even better than C Royale. Many on this site make out that Craig is not very Bond-like in this picture. It's fair to say there's no high-campery in the spirit of Roger Moore but Bond is still a three dimensional killer with a heart he tries hard to keep from influencing him.
Liam Sheils, Liverpool, England
No gadgets!
H, Calgary, Canada
Was this a James Bond film or just another mindless american action film?
Were was the arrogance, charm, gadgets, car (apart from first schene), bond girl etc?
Huge disapointment!
Sean, Malta,
This is no real "James Bond" movie. It´s just another action film containing a lot of violence. In my opinion a James Bond film has to be full of humour, British style and irony. What a pity that Roger Moore and Sean Connery can´t protect England and the world any more.
Martin Waiss, Pech, Germany
I really didn't like it. No witty dialogue, no sexy flirting, no story to follow--just one angry assasination after another. You could get Van Damme or the Rock to make this path of constant death and destruction, but not James Bond. They should have titled the movie "I'm angry and I want revenge
John, new phila., usa
Maybe I am showing my age (25), but this is the bond movie I like most. Its the least Austin Power - less sex (seen it all before), no deformed villains (seen it all before) and no "Bond, James Bond" (yawn). Its also fast, once has to pay attention. I like it.
Anne, London, UK
Quantum of Solace is the one film that in my view could tank the Franchise. A Yawn from begining to end & did director Mark Forster take his directing cues from the prize out of a cracker jack box? He's like a DJ who doesn't know how to Transition from one track to the next. I walked out of the Film
Ed Vandeweerd, Victoria , Canada
I loved Casino Royale.
I like the new, dark Bond. However, you cannot make him one-dimensional. That's what QoS did in this new bond film.
He's a killer-that's all. big deal.
No charm or humor. What happen to the bond girls? This bond movie had the most forgettable bond girls.
joey, orange, USA
Such a shame.. If its going to be realistic -no gadgets etc, then how can Bond dispose of a lift full of agents and assasins with ease , yet then struggle to better the wimp like villain? We need a good old fashioned villain to put Bond in some peril at least - in this he was never in any danger
Phil Marshall, Southend, UK
me and my fiancee went to see this film last night. I didnt like the opening song but the rest of the film was pretty good. Not as good as Casino Royale but not bad. Good stunts but few gadgets.
brian lane, Yeovil, Somerset
I'm Sorry but to say that the bond villians were "hard as nails" is ridiculous. Neither of those women added anything but sex appeal to the screen and their story asides were silly footnotes that gave us an excuse to have to cute girls running around. They looked and acted like 19 year old coeds.
Pete, montoursville, usa
Sorry I meant the new bond girls not the villians. And I wish this movie had been more about plot and less about explosions and sex. Just about everyone I've talked to agreed that they are coming dangerously close to the old cheesy formula. Casino Royale was far superior.
Pete, montoursville, usa
This could have been another generic Bourne Idenity type film. This was NOT a James Bond film! NONE of the past formula was there! You couldn't replace the past Bond actors in the part. In this one, you could have put Tom Cruise, Matt Damon or any other star in for Craig & had the same movie. Shame!
Easton, Boston,
I have seen the edited version and can't tell head from tail. The fabulous Olga something was not anywhere to be seen. The edited version was a complete waste of time, money and my visual equipment. Hopefully, full version on DVD will be a better spectacle.
Adil Saleem Khan, Lahore, Pakistan
This film is how you deconstruct James Bond. Only M and Felix tie it to being James Bond at all. No laughter, no sex, no smoking. The previous films were pure entertainment, with humour and charm, but its now become just another action movie. Even the beginning is now at the end!
Brett Stafford, Uxbridge,
I expected this to be dreadful given the reviews but it was absolutely riveting from start to finish. It has to be watched in the context of Casino Royale and is the perfect compliment to it. Craig is mesmerizing. The character of Bond is much stronger without the flag flying and silly gadgetry.
L.A. McEvoy, Dublin, Ireland
This is James Bond as he should be! Cold on the outside, raging on the inside. Ruthless to the vilains, always following his own instincts, and taking his own route to justice. I do recommend to watch Casino Royale first, before you so see Quantum of Solace. What was that Vesper girl all about again?
Karina Karel, Breda, The Netherlands
Bond fans want to see Bond, James Bond.
What a disappointment. A slight departure from the old could have been interesting, especially with such a briliant new Bond but this films lacks glamour, exotic locations, great frocks and a memorable theme song!
Kaddie Aufmanis, Melbourne, Australia
I thought it was awesome, you all worry to much about whether its like the old James Bond...It was different yeah, but it was still a great movie
Billy, London, England
A Very poor film with no meaning of bond
Bond is about cars , guns , sex also gadgets
Craig, Tilbury, Essex
This was a truly poor film. If I wanted to watch a Bourne film I would have watched a Bourne film. There was no 'Bond' as we know it, nothing that made the previous 21 films what they are was present in this. And the bad guys were pathetic, since when do nerds make good bad guys?
matt, Sydney, Australia
Casino was an astute recasting of Bond, but its sequel fails completely. Q of S pointlessly apes Bourne, the fast-cut action sequences are tedious, the story (a plot to control Bolivian water) is lame, the villain bland, wit and character development absent, Bond himself unlikeable. Don't bother.
Jim P, Sydney, Australia
I have read every Ian Fleming original book and have seen every film. Craig was great but was the only thing(beside Dench) that kept it together. It was AWFUL. I really hope they get a new writer for Bond 23 or it will be the end of the franchise.
raquel, New York,
Craig is Bond. This is the Bond that Fleming wrote. This is the Bond that Connery portrayed in the first four films. Quantum is incredible, but you have to appreciate the new camera language the director uses with jump cuts - camera work that imitates/enhances the action onscreen. Awesome film.
Nick, Castro Valley, USA
I would like to echo some of the comments above. Handicam is no substitute for cinematography. I want to see the car chase from a proper distance to fully appreciate it. I find the chase footage disorienting. Bourne 3 and Blair Witch have a lot to answer for.
A Killian, Ascot,
Everyone who has seen this has come away saying how rubbish it is. I'm seeing it tonight though and I shall keep an open mind. This article revived my intrest a little but the comments at the end have returned me to a state of depression about how much this film might spoil bond for everyone.
Phil Morrison, London,
Oh dear, perhaps we've just seen the Bond film to end all Bond films. This is nothing like the character Fleming had in mind. The old cad would be horrified by the coarse dullness of this film, its total lack of humour, fun, romance and class.
Mike, Rome, Italy
Thought Daniel Craig was excellent again, but the plot was not great and some of the action scenes were over elaborate and filmed to close to really follow. A little less time on the chases and a bit further back so we can see what is happening. Falling into the crater was also a little far fetched
Andrew Frame, Bangor, Down
The action sequences were overindulgent. The main plot was ridiculous - steal water and resell it? And the bond-chic looked much hotter when she was in Hitman. Casino Royale was good, this one was a waste of time.
Ron, Victoria, BC, Canada
Saw QoS tonight - fantastic! From beginning to end, the film was action, verve, vengeance, and it rides on emotion, never seen with earlier Bonds. They were eye candy in a macho wrapper; Mr. Craig is a man.
Ivana, Toronto, Canada
I think the main point many critics of the new bond films miss, is that the intention of the new film is to show a gritty "starter" bond. Cool gadgets, womanizing, high class kills all come with time. If you recall Bond just received 00 status in "Casino Royal." Rogue bond will develop with time.
Mike Smith, south bend, united states
QofS is allowing the bond franchise to live on in the modern world, I was a huge fan of Pierce but the last few films beforeCR had become cheesey remakes of classic bond films. QofS allows the 007 legacy to live on not die in a fat bloated remincent heap, its all building nicely for a healthy future
Huw P, Newport, UK
No further character development of Bond. He is 1-dimensional with tormented being the singular trait. I'm not saying he needs to be like old Bonds but at least show a little creativity in taking him down a new path. I like Craig, but with this screenplay, might as well have used Vin Diesel!
Kevin, Portland, USA
When the heard "James Bond" or 007, what is on my mind was super secret agent, with a lot of money, full high-tech gadget, and a man with a high sex appeal. But now, I don't see any of them. even though the new movie is still cool. But I don't feel that was the true "Bond". there is no cool gadget
Bartlett, Selangor, Malaysia
This was for the ADD generation of instant grantification demenour.Spoken to over 7 adults /8 teens all thought it was BAD.This bond film is going to drop like a rock in weekly grosses. never heard such bad word of mouth after A bond film .CS had excellent word of mouth.the direction was HORID
alan, plantation florida, usa
I have read some bad reviews of this movie let me just say they are wrong. True if you go in expecting a Roger Moore Bond film you will probably be disappointed, it has none of the cartoonish qualities of those movies. this is a great movie that does not insult the intelligence of the fan.
Mark, cheyenne, usa
I own near every Bond movie and To this day i believe Brosnan was the best Bond ever. This Bond movie is the worst of all time. The plot was very poorly supported. There were to many turns. Very poorly supported plot and the "bond" movies are no longer "bond" movies. Extremely disappointed!
Colin Furlong, Torbay, Canada
Well, I feel better.
About half way through the film I was wondering if I missed something, because I had NO idea what was going on!
If anyone reads this before seeing QofS, you must watch Casino Royale again before you go.
Otherwise, Craig is okay, but bring back the opening tease!
M Jordan, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA
I was very impressed. Even the Jack White & Alicia Keys theme tune fitted. It was new, edgey, spine tingling, action filled, tense, hardened hearted Bond at his best. It did help that I've seen Casino Royale (and not just the David Niven version!) and read Fleming's books. I can't wait for DC's 3rd
Tim Whitehead, Southampton, England
totally agree with the last comment. I used to loathe the Bond movies but Casino Royale and Quantum have been amazing. Yes, more Bourne than Bond but all the better for it.
Nicki, Abergele, Wales
Harsh on the eyes - steady cam ( or rather unsteady )makes chases uncomfortable viewing .Fast ,furious but unfocussed .
Bond simply a killing machine with no finesse -hopefully will improve with age . Far too blonde and short in the leg! Lack of glamour -
Unremarkable title sequence and theme
Kathryn Birch , Essex, UK
QUantum is emotionally dead-on as a continuation of 'Casino' -- Bond is still in his formative stage and comes into his own here. This is 007 for adults, and those looking for the formula should rent the old films. A franchise needs to stretch in order tokeep from becoming stale.
dave, long beach ca,
a bad Bond movie. no theme music, no humor, no Q, no martinis, no gadgets. this movie went too far away from the prissy Roger Moore days when the movies became slapstick. Craig may be the best Bond ever.... but this movie was more Jason Bourne than Bond. Would wait and rent it this summer.
Hamp, Stokes, USA
i went to sleep after the first 20 minutes and when I awoke I had no idea what was happening. There was no suave as with previous bonds...........waste of money and time
tracey, rochester, USA
Personally I thought this was one of the worst Bond movies ever! It's fine as an action movie, but not Bond. Where are the "nasty" warped villans? (I've seen kindergarten teachers meaner than these guys). Where is "Q" and the fancy watches? Wait to get this on video if you want to see it!
Michael, Stratford, Canada
The ONLY disappointment was the choice of opening song.Nothing dissuaded me from thinking that Craig is the best Bond ever.Roger Moore had the humor and he was the worst Bond.Action was amazing, girls hot, and the character of Bond is much more complex and fuller than any before him. Fantastic&Real
Shank, Ft. Collins, USA
Worst Bond Film ever,
Where's the big opening stunt?
Where's the gadgets?
And he didn't even get the girl.
Just terrible, don't waste your money.
Lyle Schmidtchen, Los Angeles, USA
this was the worst bond movie ever!!!. aston for only 5 minutes. no new gadgets. no martini. sex with only one women. no sex in the end. come on. they took away all of the elements taht made bond who he is
Besi Bezhani, New Haven,
What a disappoinment. After years of refusing to see another Bond movie, I end up seeing the worst of them all. There's no way of me ever going to see any other. Call it a day Miss Broccoli and leave Bond rest beside Fleming. He truly deserves it.
Philip , Zuerich,
Better than Casino Royale, but still not a classic Bond film. The action sequence before the opening credits, the sine qua non of a Bond film, was way too short. The last "real" Bond film for me was The World is Not Enough. And I don't care how the books are, that's why I watch the movie instead.
Richard, Sacramento, USA
I understand that a lot of Bond fans are missing the James Bond we've all come to know. But you need to remember the story line here. At the time of this movie, Bond has been on 00 status for maybe a few weeks. Follow the story. It will make sense that way. Go watch Casino Royale!!
Clay, Anchorage,
I don't think this Quantum is better than Casino Royale. Even with our current Gadget World - I would want to see Bond's gadget. Just think of something, people! Bring 'em back. And the flirting with Moneypenny. I love those. Those should at the house. Bring back Q also. Thanks.
Mon J Gamil, Mississauga, Canada
Honestly, this Bond was a disappontment.Way too many fight scenes (and yes they were amazing and intricate) but seriously, does there need to be a chase scene in every mode of transportation?! Plus where is the old swaggar James Bond is supposed to have? Where's the flirting and cockiness?
Sara, Toronto, Canada
Quantum of Solace
1. Rooftop chase scene. We get itchasing a guy around chimneys is hard.
2. Air chase scene: thank you for not using a F-22
3. Thank you for the absence a kidnapping.
Paul Young, Colchester , England
The name's Bourne......James Bourne. Although Daniel plays a great hard core bond, the latest is a disappointment. No gadgets, no Bond like senario's. The first was great, this one is back to the drawing board. Did u know most of the team were from the Bourne Team?
James Cole, London, UK
Read original Ian Fleming novels and you will see that that bond is more like this Bond. Cold, Distant...Thats the way he was written...thats the way he is being played...
jenn, edison, usa
If you're looking for grace and class in your Bond ...you don't know Bond. Fleming imagined him as "an anonymous, blunt instrument wielded by a government department." In the books it was said that "there was something a bit cruel in the mouth, and the eyes were cold." Doesn't sound very classy.
strauben, Chicago, The Colonies
i havent seen the casino royale and im watching it next monday? what have i missed so far?
david, london,
All those that say they like this film are clearly young viewers ( young as in KIDS) and / or are not Bond fans - he is supposed to be an ex navy officer not a raw recruit, where are the gadgets? where is the car we all love to see first in Bond. NO GAGS? Mr Craig is not the problem - the film is!
James, Anywhere,
I believe the people who dont like the way we see bond in this movie are just not intrested in seeing another side of bond. He's not always the same. just like people aren't always happy. Seeing this side will remind people of how bond could've acted in various situations and the way he chose to act
Mark, Stockton-on-tees,
james bond has never been known as a dark character. they should just stick to the cool stunts/action and light, witty remarks because right now, it has just become a bourne rip off.
Herbert, Manila,
An excellent film let down by its conclusion. The fight at the hotel at the end was a let down. But a great cliff hanger I've really enjoyed this darker version of Bond. Its more believable.
Edward, London,
i definitely agree that the movie has a weak story line. Poor are the audience who did not watch Casino Royale, will they be able to follow and understand the beginning? And yes, the scripts..they are less than less.
Maria Mae Seedfaith Crispino, Davao del Sur, Philippines
It was too similar to the Bourne films, especially the part 2 aspect and the action sequences too. Otherwise great action flick but just like most action flicks and less like a true Bond movie. Story line weak and not explained but otherwise fun to watch.
Hafsa Laskar, London, United Kingdom
You know what? Too many people here simply do not understand the story. Complains of the movie being plotless can only be true if you understand the plot in the first place. I just watched it and I think its brilliant. A great continuation from CR and I think Craig is the best Bond.
Steve, Beijing, PRC
Daniel Craig is an excellent Bond, its just the second film was pants, once again the actor has been let down by the script all because Hollywood wanted to earn a quick buck. Most quality actors could be Bond but alass very few scripts will ever live up to Ian Flemmings books.
David, Fareham, UK
I'm not a big bond fan, but I really liked it. Although it's not a "real" Bond without all the gadgets. So Q in my eyes should be back in a sequel. And I assume there will be one, since it ended with a giant cliffhanger... What did Dominic Greene tell Bond in the end...
Saber, Chillburg, Holland
Where can I write to Barbara Broccoli? Where can I write to Marc Forster? He was always reluctant to direct a Bond action movie. Now I can see why. Why spend many months planning and rehearsing stunts if you can't appreciate them because of the nauseating camera work and rapid editing. 2/5
George Hamilton, London, UK
Never seen a bond with such strong pictures and such a character. Absolutely awesome.
saiid, Oslo,
brilliant film, stunts and plot were briliant, my only issue with the film is it is very fast paced.
bob, london, england
Quite a good movie... action sequences are great.... makes bond look like spidey or daredevil... But, frankly, the movie is short... very abrupt... The story seems to miss something... but i can't put my finger on anything....
Though still i'll give it 3-stars out of 5
Kumar Harsh, Jaipur, India
Before I came to watch the movie i thought it would be great.
after i came out in dissapointment..
No gadgets, no q, no real typicall old bonf jokes, no proper car action, no PLOT !!!!
This bond is boring and dull, even if people say its just the beggining still their should be more excitment!
Anton, Prague, Czech Republic
I thought the film was wonderfully stylish and sleak.I liked the fact that to tell the story they didn't need long narratives it was just all there visually.
The cinemtography was real Bond stuff and it reminded me of the old Bond movies with a contemporary feel .Classic Bond lives on.!!!!
natalie, natal, brasil
After Casino Royale I had high hopes for this one but I couldn't be more disappointed. The plot was extremely poor and the use of montage was excessive to the point of disturbing. Still Daniel Craig is by far the best Bond I have ever seen and it's such a pity he was actually wasted in this film.
Santa Maria, Thessaloniki, Greece
Fantastic film. I think it is wonderful that the film continues what was started by Casino Royale: taking Bond back to the original character created by Fleming. Daniel Craig has demonstrated once again his amazig talent!
Adrienne, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Even if it is bond at is beggining, are we forced to like a bad movie?
Miguel, Lisboa,
This is the one review I whole heartedly agree with.Quantum of Solace is one of the most entertaining films I've seen in a long time, and one of the all time great Bond films. The opening car chase was magnificent! If people want soul-searching they should watch Ingmar Bergman, not a James Bond film
Paul, Aberdeen, Scotland
Agent Fields isn't 'raven-haired' in the movie, she has red hair.
I thought the movie was too frantic. Daniel Craig is good, but he pouts too much - he's a bit one dimensional in this film. There should be more flirtation, dialogue, pauses to let the audience catch our breath.
Naomi Sachs, London, United Kingdom
i would strongly agree with most people here, load of rubbish, bond was very cold and prtrayed as a killer, there was no q, no special gadgets not like the typicial bond movie, story line was very week, craig didnt make the role belivable , real bond fans dont go near this, bring back p.brosan
john , donegal , ireland
this is the bond in making...so first he ll be ruthless....but later he ll grow up..so wait for the next ...this a gud one to watch ..th e reel bond in making...cheers
anish, mumbai, india
What a crashing disappointment! Casino Royal was ace, making this mess of a film a bitter pill to swallow. Convoluted, poorly told story, badly edited action sequences (where you can't what is going on), and no humor? Oh, what fun... They changed the Director and crew from Casino Royal. It shows!
David, Aylesbury, United Kingdom
went in a good mood .left in a bad one.plot /story there is none
i wright, sunderland,
Frankly, a poor effort from a franchise that ran out of ideas about 4 films ago. It's a pity Daniel Craig is being made to sink along with the Bond ship...
Tom, London,
Having been a Bond fan for most of my life and excited by the prospect of this after the fantastic Casino Royale I was disappointed. Is it James Bourne or James Bond? The action seemed too quick seemingly trying to detract from the week story line. Don't expect miracles here.
Rupert, London,
Full of quick angle changes, which makes action difficult to follow. Villain lacks any depth and many fun 'Bond' moments are missed. Could be any action film, and certainly will be quickly forgotten qyucjkt by those who watch it. Saved only by Craig, who makes a good Bond. Dissapointing.
John Mason, Bristol, UK
Eventhought the start is exciting the movie moves into one more action packed film much like a triple X one, so a bit boring. The essence of Bond with gadgets in cars/watches/shoes etc are not even hinted on. Casino R. was dissapointing and now 1 more Bond film looses its core essence. Bring it back
Jake, amersham, buckinghamshire
I think what everyone is forgetting is that this is Bond at the beginning of his journey. The Bond of old is coming. I myself watched the film last night and thought it was brilliant. I didnt notice the running time and never looked at my watch which in my opinion makes this a really good film.
Ben, Yate, England
The stunts were no doubt great but the filming should of panned out more so we could actually see what was going on. Take the opening from Casino Royale with the street running and the roof top scenes, this was spectacular because we could all see what as happening. All to rushed!!!
Peter, Tring,
In all fairness everybodys comments about it not being Bond enough, although justified are flawed The Bond franchise was losing its edge if we had more and more films like its predecessors it would eventually become outdated. It's not the best Bond ever, but for 2008 it was a very good film, Craig!!
philip, plymouth, england
i agree with all tha was said no story,no gadgets, james bond is a spy not a frontline killer
mark, london, UK
Quantum of Solace is absolutely brilliant - from the first insane car chase it just keeps up the tempo all the way through. I loved every second of it!
Will, Bristol, England,
Casino Royale top marks for story and style. Quantum good effort but needs to do better. Lots of bangs, crashes and slick movie making... but the story was too jumpy and unclear.
How/why did it get so complicated with everyone gunning for 007 all at once? Really ruined it for me...
Avtar Singh, Wakefield, England
A huge disappointment. very unclear filming, uncertain plot with unexplained leaps to next scene - not worth the time to watch. I do not recommend this film as worthy of seeing. Plenty of bangs and crashes, smoke and fire. It starts with the most inexplicable and strange car chase.
james woodward, Maltby, South Yorkshire
Nothing but a generic action movie.
Take out Craig, insert Jackie Chan/Bruce Willis/etc., and the movie stays the same.
Very disappointing. Nothing against Craig's acting skills, the movie just doesn't give him anything to work with. It tries to be a Jason Bourne movie, instead of a Bond.
TerryD, London, England
I think people tend to forget that THIS Bond, is the one in the making. He has just recieved his 00-status, he is a diamond in the rough.
To become the "coldhearted" womanizer, a woman must break his heart. To become sofisticated, he must gain experience. Give the relaunch some time ... ;)
Jan Flemming, Århus, Denmark
What happened to the traditional line "Bond, James Bond" ?
It may have been corny, but it made the film so much better.
And where is Q? Where are the Gadgets?
Ade, Manchester, England
Nah...I have to be one of the biggest Bond fans ever. I can even recall going to see Dr. No in the old Playhouse Cinema (now theater) in Edinburgh! But this latest offering was disappointing, and didn't live up to its superb predecessor Casino Royale. Too much action and too little substance.
Ken Johnstone, DUBLIN, Ireland
This is who Bond is , relentless, uncaring but dutiful.
Fast paced, blink and you miss it action and plot from start to finish.Left open to run and run with more of the same.
Bring it on ASAP.
Steven Richard Hoyle, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Watched last night, very disappointing. tried to modernise & darken JB, falling into trap of feeling the need to compete with Bourne have totally sterilised it. No humour, no real villans, no real henchman (the geek with the wig hardly a Jaws!?!) not a single gadget, no britishness. uniqueness lost!
Michael, Surrey, England
I though it was great - the first Bond film that kept my attention all the way through... most of them can be a chore sometimes but this is fast paced, Bourne style fast fighting action. If I'd change anything I would remove "this is double our usual rates" bit at the end - awful plot!
P.Thompson, Rugby,
Like the fact it is just back to basic bond with no stupid invisible cars or other over the top gadgets but the storyline was useless. After an amazing first film this new one was awful - Not really any scary bad guy and too much confusion with bond chased by MI6 CIA Police and back again.
Bill, Chester,
Bond is a classic in lighthearted action and one liners. These past two movies show how the movie industry has turned to indorsements to fund their films. You watch 007 for the outrageous explosions, and huge risks, usually with a count down and a giant red button. This was all stylish rubbish.
Sam, Leek, UK
Just back from watching this and loved it! Number one Bond for me used to be Roger Moore and now Daniel Craig. Broody, moody and edgy.
angelaero, fife, scotland
Dreadful, tedious, confusing,boring even painful.
As a bond film this is the poorest we have ever seen .. we being self, wife and two teanage sons from the x box shoot em up kill them all genre of games.
Last family outing was Dark Knight - by conparison 007 was a tired, anti climatic flop.
Stephen, Joyce and the boys, Newcsatle upon Tyne ,
I miss the Bond's that were fun. Gadgets, explosions, stupid but funny one-liners.
Now it's all very dark and negative and you leave the cinema feeling sad.
I want Q back!
Jonathan, Manchester, UK
Could have produced a one off quipped Bond film but went for continuation. Excellent and a great vehicle for Daniel Craig. No easy ending. Can't wait for next one.
Catherine, Leeds,
C'mon Tim!
Dalton best Bond?
In other news...Rupert Murdoch to take on Santa role.
Tony Blair for Middle East Peace envoy...hang on, somethings not right here.
mike, Cardiff, Wales
Very dissapointing! No humor, no gadgets and no real 'bondness' in that film. It felt like a typical action shoot em up film that wont live long in the memory. I also feel that Bond has been altered to suite foreign audiences. There was no British feel to the movie.
Simon, Portsmouth, UK
Contrived or senseless in places. Storyline gaps. Repetitive formulaic action, basic continuity flaws. Average performances from many including Judy Dench. Excellent performance from Craig, but overall a dissapointment. An amateurish job from Foster from a franchise requiring far more polish.
david crawford, belfast, uk
I want the money I spent on the cinema tickets back.
James, Newcastle,
just saw the movie tonight ( QOS ) , and i truely belive it was outstanding , 5 stars from me and i also think DC is by far the best bond yet !
Dave, Whitby, England
Daniel Craig is the best bond, but Quantum of Solace was a bit of a disappointment. I loved Casino Royale so expected a bit more from the latest James Bond film. It all seemed about stunts more than anything else. The baddies were not menacing enough either.
Zoe , Whitley Bay, England
Just Saw the movie and i must say this one is even worse than Casino Royal. The Characters in Casino Royal didn't stay with me, and that meant some awkward moments in this movie...
+:
Daniel Craig, M, Music and Theater Scene.
- :
No Gadgets or Q, Storyline is hard to follow and no Info on QOS.....
Alexander, Stockholm, Sweden
Bond used to be charming, hot, funny, manly. All of that is gone with Craig. If Craig would be the cause for Bond movies success, all his other movies would be box office hits too. They're not, so Craig is not the reason Bond movies reek in viewers. People just like the plots. The actor is second.
Karen, Monaco, France
Really dissappointed with this film - it is not Daniel Craigs fault as he is a great actor but he is no Bond. Casino Royal and QOS is neither Bond or Bourne quality really - these last two films just do not fit right. Sadly seem rather dated which is a shame as I do love a bond movie just not these.
David, London , UK
Yawn - action scenes are great, but oh boy, the rest is pretty dire! The storyline is really poor. Can't believe how short it is either!!
Dunc, Horsham,
People going on about how the likes of Dalton and Craig aren't the closer to what the definitive Bond is need to read the books.
Bond is a flawed and conflicted character.
James, London,, American Expat
If you loved CASINO ROYALE then I'm afraid you will hate QUANTUM of SOLACE - it's a mess - and that is such a shame after we all thought Craig was the saviour.
Alot of people who haven't seen QoS are sticking up for the movie believing it to be another cracking Casino Royale but truly it is not.
george, basingstoke,
Just watched a screening today and I'm afraid I found it very disappointing after Casino Royale, & so did all of my group. The villains are about as scary as a boy scout and the characters have no depth. Also the humour and glamour has now all but gone.
I would give CR 4/5 and Quantum 3/5.
george, Basingstoke,
Daniel Craig is not meant to be charming and the lady killer. He is raw emtionless and this what he was trained to be. He is learning about himself and how he should be a double o. Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace are prequals to Sean Conerys film first film. We learn about the dark side of bond
Gareth Thomas, Bridgend, Wales
actually Diamonds are Forever followed swiftly on from On her majesty's Secret Service with Bond hunting down the killer of his wife. nothing really new here.
andrew m bark, manchester, UK
I really like the idea of continuity between this Bond film and the last. Also having grown up with all the "Bonds" I agree that Daniel Craig is right on in his up to date portrayal. I just hope they can keep the the action sequences believable with a down to earth Bond(ing).
Ron, Los Angeles, California
I still have not bought Craig as Bond..He just does not have the grace or class I grew up with in a Bond. With all the high tech, is it really Craig or the action scenes that have caught you in their grip..Luke Goss would be my vote for the next Bond, he has all the qualities I have loved in 007
Tara Reidein, Brighton, UK
So much of Casino Royal looks like an early Bond film: the scene after the car crash, Bond rushing into a doorway in a hotel hallway or sitting in M's apartment, etc. But Craig channels both Connery and Flemming's creation: A brutal killer, trusting his hands more than any gadgets or guns.
Kenneth Gitlitz, Exeter, USA
Hey, how could you forget Barry Nelson? Seriousley as one who has lived through all the Bond incarnations. It was all Connery......... Up until Craig. But the new films are a different product altoghether more in line with Flemings anti hero type Bond as evidenced in the latter books.
Stuart Hutnick, Oakville, Canada
It was a shame that Timothy Dalton's Bond was out of place - end of the Cold War and all that. But when he sought revenge for the death of Felix Leiter's wife, I thought he was very menacing. Daniel Craig is absolutely magnificent. He is even more menacing and totally believable.
Jacqueline Wainwright, Melbourne, Australia
Connery was peerless in his version of the cheeky, womanizing commander Bond, as deft with a PPK or judo move as he was maintining his macho while sipping a martini. Craig owns this new incarnation. Don't even mention Moore, Dalton, or Bronson in connection to Bond. They were Hollywood implants.
Tycho, Taipei, Taiwan
Dalton was great in License To Kill, one of the best Bond films ever made, however he was rather wooden in Living Daylights, which by contrast was cheesy rubbish. I think that's why Dalton is controversial. Craig is excellent, as he brought out the vulnerability + hardness not seen since L To K.
Tad, Egham, UK
timothy dalton definately the best
baazaro, shanghai,
Tinothy Dalton the best Bond? He was even worse than Moore who at least did not try to act-Dalton was more wooden than the scenery.
I feel that Craig is the closest to the original concept and a great actor.
Beresford du-Cille, West Bromwich, UK
The real Bond first appeared cold-bloodedly dispatching the treacherous unarmed doctor in Dr No, but slowly faded from view to finally reappear in the opening scene of Casino Royale. Quantum of Solace has the revenge driven cold-blooded Bond I've been waiting so long for. Bourne lite? You wish USA.
Gary , Ramsey,
Flemming's Bond was a sociopath. Flemming actually tried to kill him off at the end of the book, From Russia with Love. Why should anyone dispair that Bond in films have a dark side?
Barry Jacobs, m. D., Carrollton, Texas, U.S.A.
Spot on Gavin, Timothy Dalton was head and shoulders the best Bond in my opinion.
stu, london,
I had never been a Bond fan before Casino. I found it all a bit too cheesy (yes I know it's supposed to be) but all gadgets and not much real action, but Daniel Craig changed my view - Bond is now a real action hero. Watched him filming the new movie in Sienna and can't wait to see the finished film
Laura Jane, South Lakes, UK
"He has defined himself as a darker Bond than any of his elegant predecessors.... The deadpan humour is still there. "
This is what annoys me. These are all the reasons people (wrongly) disliked Dalton, the truest incarnation of Bond we have had to date. Dalton did gritty and deadpan first.
Gavin, Durham,
Reviewer James Christopher refers to Agent Field as 'raven-haired' - funny, I've never seen a raven with red-brown plumage. Why use a tired old cliche as a description when it isn't even accurate? This sloppy writing makes me disinclined to give the review any value at all.
Jenny, London,
At the core, Bond is a killer by the very nature of his job. Would you really have felt particularly threatened by Roger Moore? Imagine Connery playing solitaire with a silenced pistol to hand before calmly despatching a would-be assassin in Dr. No...
I'm very much looking forward to the new film.
Richard, Marlow, UK
Good! Bond's a hard, self centred man you mess with at your peril. It's good that they have finally bought this out with Daniel Craig. (Timothy Dalton was the next closest to the books.)
I'm looking forward to it.
James, tiger13,
I saw the first pre screening of the movie on Friday in London & i must admit i was disappointed. I found the plot incomprehensible and Craig still a superb Bond has reverted back to cartoonish super hero and the vulnerable side on show in Casino Royale has gone. Stunts still great but Disappointed
carl cushnie, London, England
Having just read the Ian Fleming books, it is amazing how unlike James Bond Daniel Craig is.
Craig is like some ugly, cold, classless killing machine and the Bond of the books is a much more soft and romantic hero that dreads killing at all and always falls for the girls.
Jason Bourne-lite?
David G. Bond, New York, USA
Daniel Craig - feel proud you have lived far beyond the British publics expectations - well done
Sarah, London, UK
I just wish some of the films had been a little better in the quality control department. I suppose they were a product of their times but some of them were truly derisive. Casino Royale seemed to be heading closer towards Jason Bourne and that is fine in my view.
Michael, Aberdeen, UK
Like it or not, Craig is the perfect Bond for our times.
ashok pandian, india, india
If you want fun watch roger moore if you want dark see Connery and Daniel Craig.
Before Daniel Craig the only decent Bond films in the last 25 years were The Living Daylights and the World is not enough.
Mark Davies, CARDIFF, UK
I'm more than happy about the direction the Bond films are taking. I have to say I hated the last few Brosnan films (although I thought the dark Goldeneye was excellent), and their "ridiculous villains and even more ridiculous plots" were the cause.
I'm really looking forward to this film.
Ben, London, UK
If you ever read the books - this bond keeps it true. this is how it should be.
Clare, Brighton,
The estimated box office figures for this picture would suggest other wise Adam!
Rick, London, England
So it is a perfect film?
Mark, London, UK
How dull.
Bond used to be about fun. Explosions, ridiculous villains and even more ridiculous plots - now he's intense and issue laden.
Yawn.
Adam Smith, birmingham, england
