One of the few hits of an American TV season scarred by the writers’ strike, Mad Men is a swinging drama set in the glory days of 1960s Madison Avenue, where modern advertising was born. The evocation of period, through pastel colours and a fug of cigarette smoke, is remarkable, as slick as the grease that coats the hair of the male leads. As Don Draper, the “best ad-man in the world”, Hamm somehow makes building a career on casual sexism and deceit seem charming, and thoroughly deserved his Golden Globe.
Like its characters, the show gets a little too pleased with itself at times, and when its focus shifts from the professional to the personal, soap wins out over sharpness. By the end, the bubbles pop, leaving you hungry for more.
