Marie trains by lifting up boxes of washing powder, before her rotund friend Anne (Louise Blachère) measures her meagre biceps. “We do a lot of weight training and have our body-fat index measured regularly,” confirms Beth.

The flat-chested Marie is taken to a practice session by the ample Floriane. She waits until everyone has left before she takes off her vest “I used to do that as well,” Beckie says.

The routine falls apart. “Synchronised swimming is not easy,” stresses Louise. “You have to hold your breath, be in the right position, be in time with the music, in line with your team mates, count the music, swim and hold yourself up out of the water – all at the same time.”

A girl rubs something into Floriane’s hair. “That’s gelatin,” explains Louise. “It sets hard when you hit the water.”

The girls are inspected and one is chastised by the coach for not shaving under her arms. “They might check hair and make-up but never armpits,” Beckie says. “Don’t forget French girls are hairier than us!” smiles Lauren.

The team practise their routine. “That was all wrong,” tuts Beckie. “You never count aloud during a routine.”

Marie, now besotted with Floriane, spends the night at her house. “My parents would have gone mad if I was out all night at her age,” Louise exclaims.

Floriane is a virgin but wants her boyfriend to think that she is far from it. “I knew girls like her in school who acted the part but in reality were not the real deal,” Beckie says. “Other girls are scared and just want to get it over with.”

Florian snogs Marie in the changing room. “The poor girl looks as if she is going to be sick,” laughs Beckie.

VERDICT

Our panel were not particularly impressed. “I didn’t get it at all. It was really weird,” thought Beckie. “I didn’t know what the girls were thinking at any time,” complained a confused Louise. “As far as the synchronised swimming went, at least it was kind of accurate,” conceded Beth.
