Jerry (Jack Black) is hanging out in his local video rental store. His friend
Mike (Mos Def) is the shop assistant. “I worked in a DVD rental store,”
Craig recalls. “The most embarrassing thing was when people returned their
naughty ‘home movies’ to us by mistake.” “Maybe they did it on purpose?” Ed
suggests.
20:52min
A customer returns a videotape. It’s blank. Indeed, every tape in the store
has been accidentally wiped. Jerry and Mike decide to remake Ghostbusters
to rent to a loyal and influential customer. Jerry tells Mike: “I’ll be Bill
Murray and you’ll be everyone else.” “That just about sums up the whole
film,” Ben says.
28:43min
They shoot their movie, improvising as they go along. “That is how it is when
you make short films,” Ed says. “I did a film once that involved a dead
seagull. We couldn’t afford a fake one, so we tried to kill one with an air
rifle. We failed miserably, so, instead, we made a film about a guy trying
to kill a seagull.”
32:01min
Mike and Jerry argue about the making of their film. “They’ve got that right,”
says Ben. “No matter how small or short your film is, it is your baby and
you’re very passionate about it.”
39:40min
Mike and Jerry enlist the help of their local dry cleaner, Alma (Melonie
Diaz), to help make their movies. “Almost everyone will help you when you
make a short film,” explains Stefan, “just as long as they’re in it.”
44:02min
Alma says that 20 minutes is the perfect time for a film as “that is how long
people can concentrate for”. “The director Michel Gondry has tapped into the
YouTube generation whose attention spans are a lot shorter,” Ben says.
57:08min
The films are a success, and there is a huge queue outside the store. We see
them remake a succession of films. “Gondry has run out of steam and is just
repeating himself,” Ben says.
88:12min
The shop has been condemned to make way for a new development. The whole
neighbourhood comes out to watch a screening of their latest film before the
bulldozers move in. “It’s too schmaltzy now,” chides Ben.
VERDICT
The opinions were mixed. Ed felt nothing about it either way, Stefan considered it oversentimental, while Craig thought that you would have to have seen many of the films they spoofed to understand the humour. “It’s flawed, but it did show what you have to go through to make a film with no money,” concluded Ben.
