Made for a mere $25million, Reeves's monster-takes-Manhattan home movie represents possibly the best scares-per-buck ratio in film history. Presenting itself as shakily shot found camcorder footage, it derives its power from its incompleteness - the brief glimpses of insectoid beastie, the bite victim haemorrhaging behind a plastic curtain, the unseen grieving mother on the other end of a phone line.
Considering the ingenuity with which the film was promoted via websites and teaser trailers, the guileless extras are a bit of a wasted opportunity, although it's fun watching the distinguished cinematographers learning how to shoot like amateurs.
