Jean-Do wakes up paralysed in hospital and is told his speech will improve. “We would never tell a patient that because we really don't know,” Sophie says. “But it is something a doctor might say!” laughs Lucy.
9:01min
Jean-Do is told he has Locked-in Syndrome. “This is a rare condition when you're paralysed after a stroke and only have vertical eye movement.” Sally says. “But they haven't done any of the assessments to diagnose it,” notes Lucy.
11:49min
Henriette, Jean-Do's speech therapist, asks him questions and tells him to blink once for yes, twice for no. “Most people think speech therapists only deal with kids with lisps,” says Sally. “Our job is to establish communication systems,” Sophie adds.
13:43min
Henriette asks Jean-Do if he was the Editor of Elle. “We ask families for information about the patient's life so we know what they will find interesting to talk about,” says Lucy.
21:37min
Henriette reads a list of letters and Jean-Do blinks at the correct ones to spell a word. He eventually uses this system to write the book that the film is based on. “He's very alert - most people don't have that level of understanding after a stroke,” says Sally.
27:45min
“How do they know he wants to say something? They never ask him, they just begin reading letters,” says Robert. “If he didn't he'd have to quickly think of something witty!” adds Sally.
32:21min
Jean-Do tells his therapist he wants to die, and she runs from the room. “That's a bit melodramatic,” thinks Robert. “People say that all the time,” adds Sally. “You would never react emotionally, but you might let the doctors know.”
49:33min
Jean-Do's friend puts a hat on him, and he thinks “I look like a rabbit.” “This is realistic, it highlights that people in this situation lose the choices that we take for granted,” says Sophie.
86:34min
Jean-Do's former girlfriend uses the letter/blinking system to translate a phone call from his current lover. “I've had to translate end-of- life conversations, and I find that difficult,” says Sally.
VERDICT
Lucy thought that this was a very realistic portrayal of speech therapy. Robert and Sally agreed, and felt that it was a brave and honest account of the situation, and generally of their role. Sophie agreed, but felt that the patient's lack of control could have been highlighted further.
