The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday
4:09min
Juno takes a home pregnancy test. “I took two home tests and they were
negative, but my mum made me go to the doctors and it was positive,” says
Sarah.
7:10min
Juno tells her friend she’s pregnant. “Friends can’t relate to what I’m going
through – they think a baby is a fashion accessory,” says Charlotte. “I was
really lonely, so I visited web chat rooms for young mums,” Sarah adds.
18:31min
Juno visits an abortion clinic, but decides against it. “That’s what I did – I
couldn’t do it. I feel if you get pregnant it’s meant to be,” asserts
Stacey.
21:22min
Juno decides to have her baby adopted. “I wanted my baby to be cared for
properly, but I felt that I got myself into this mess, so I’ll be the one to
do it,” Sarah says.
23:37min
Juno’s father is disappointed. “My mum was upset, but my dad wasn’t bothered –
he said he knew it was going to happen,” Charlotte recalls.
29:40min
Juno doesn’t know what a “trimester” is. “I don’t like that part,” Sarah says
angrily. “We have it all explained and we understand just as well as anyone
else. It makes us look dumb when we’re not dumb.”
33:12min
Juno says that she’s in high school, and ill-equipped to care for a baby. “I
did feel like that at first,” says Stacey. “I had nowhere to live, no job.
But with good family around, you can make it work. I now have a flat and I’m
starting college in September.”
38:34min
The father, Bleeker, asks Juno to the movies, but she’s having an ultrasound
scan.
“There are some things I can’t do now, but it’s better. All I was doing before was partying and getting drunk, and now my focus is on giving Ryley a good childhood,” says Stacey.
39:59min
The ultrasound technician says Juno is a “poisonous environment” for a baby.
“I get a lot of looks on the streets, but just because I’m young doesn’t
mean I’m a bad mum,” insists Sarah. “It’s not the age that matters, it’s the
person. I know older women who aren’t as good mums as we are,” agrees
Stacey.
49:32min
Juno argues with her stepmum. “My mum always gives me advice, but it’s up to
me whether I take it or not. Nine times out of ten I take it,” giggles
Sarah. “We are much closer now I’ve had David – we can talk about sex and
not feel uncomfortable.”
58:41min
People stare at Juno in school. “I got so many nasty remarks from teachers. My
history teacher called me irresponsible and wouldn’t even let me go to the
toilet. One teacher was nice, though, and bought some clothes for Courtney,”
says Charlotte.
63:01min
Juno shouts at Bleeker: “You don’t have to have the evidence under your
sweater!” “Teenage fathers do get off lightly. I haven’t seen David’s father
since I was six months pregnant,” says Sarah. “They’re not all like that,
though. Ryley’s dad is fantastic,” Stacey adds.
84:37min
Juno gives birth, and says the baby doesn’t feel like her own. “The minute I
had Ryley I became a woman, and my outlook changed. I can’t even describe
how much I love him. I never realised I’d feel this way,” says Stacey.
86:33min
Juno’s father tells her that one day she’ll be back here, having a baby on her
own terms. “When you’re older, you’re wiser, so yes, it’s better to wait,”
admits Stacey, “but things do happen and you have to make the best of what’s
there. I’ll prove to everyone that I will get a good career and I’ll bring
my baby up. I’ll do it, I know I will.”
VERDICT
The panel felt that the film highlighted some aspects of teenage pregnancy, but that it made it look easy, and didn’t show what a difficult and emotional process it is. They felt that it implied that pregnant teenagers do not take their situation seriously, and that they are all uninformed and irresponsible.
Juno is out on Jun 9. Thanks to Honeypot children’s charity (www.honeypot.co.uk).
