The Coen brothers’ most commercially successful and awards-laden film stands up well to repeated viewing. When I first saw it, I raved about Bardem’s predatory shark of a killer. This time, it was the obsession with detail, the leisurely dialogue and the painterly camera angles that caught the eye.
The story, of the hunt for missing money from a drug deal gone wrong, is a simple one. It’s the telling of it that captivates, its meditative visual asides matched by superlative performances from all the leads. But for my money Fargo and Blood Simple remain the Coens’ best work, and a comparative discussion with the reclusive film-makers would have made a nice extra, in place of the “this was a fabulous experience” documentaries here.
