Career: Lord Sharman is one of the biggest climbers in this year’s Power 100, largely because of his recent acquisition of a non-executive directorship of Aviva, the insurer. In January, he is to take the chair of the insurer formed by the merger of Norwich Union, Commerical Union and General Accident. Sharman is a former chairman of KPMG International, the accounting and management consulting group, which he joined in 1966. He was appointed to BG’s board in 2000 and Reed Elsevier’s in 2002. Sharman has been non-executive chairman of Aegis, the advertising agency, since 2000, having served on its board since 1999. He joined Securicor, the security company that merged with Group 4 this year, in 2003 and is due to step down later this year. Sharman has been a member of the supervisory board of ABN Amro, the Dutch bank, since 2003. Between 1996 and 2002, he was a director of AEA Technology, the business spun out of the Atomic Energy Authority. From 1999 to 2002, he was a non-executive director of Young & Co, the brewer.

Mary Francis (see 93=) and Sharman both sit on Aviva’s board. Francis has also been a non-executive director of Centrica, one of the daughter companies of British Gas. BG, of which Sharman is a non-executive director, is the other daughter company.
